2019 Season Auditions Announcement
The Village Carolers will be auditioning for spots in its 2019 roster on September 28th from 1pm-4pm, and September 29th from 2pm-6pm. Auditions will be held at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ.
Please read the entire audition announcement before applying.
Interested applicants should send their resume, head shot, and links to audio/video showing a performance or two digitally to firstname.lastname@example.org. We will contact you if we feel you might be a good fit. If granted an audition, you will be sent three of our pieces to prepare. You will sing those pieces in a quartet with some of our veteran singers.
You must be able to sing in a variety of languages comfortably, and be able to switch between robust classical singing and tight jazz harmonies from one piece to the next. There is no age limit, but you must be able to perform sometimes for multiple hours.
Those interested in auditioning for The Village Carolers will be asked to prepare three of our carols/songs, which will be provided if an audition is granted. You will be asked to perform with experienced veterans of The Village Carolers on those pieces.
Singers are not required to sing exclusively for The Village Carolers and may perform with other groups. This is discouraged, however. Our folder is extensive, and with the rehearsal commitment, we do not want you to learn all of that music just to go and sing somewhere else and lose the gigs we can offer you. You may not use our music, costumes, lights, folders, or other resources for other groups.
There are 77 pieces in the 2019 book. In the past we have trusted singers to learn on their own with rehearsal tracks, and required less rehearsal. This did not work, as we had to fire several singers who did not prepare and assumed they could wing it. Some of these pieces are harder than they look. Therefore, we will be having a total of five unpaid rehearsals.
New singers will have two rehearsals in order to get caught up (afternoons Sunday October 20th and Sunday October 27th), and veterans will join them for three additional rehearsals (afternoons Sundays November 3, 10, and 17). The final rehearsal is testing in quartets, so you will not be singing much during that rehearsal.
Performance Level Expectations
Singers are expected to perform the music in the book correctly with folders raised and not continually buried in the score. This is not a church job. Think of it more as a semi-staged performance. Any singer who is unable to demonstrate the ability to perform at this level during the final testing rehearsal will not be issued a costume and will not be invited to sing in any performance opportunities that season.
Please do not take this requirement lightly.
We have regrettably had to fire veteran singers in the past who did not learn the music in time.
Sheet music is provided digitally well in advance of the rehearsal period. Anyone not ready to perform will not be given a performance. It’s that simple.
General availability from Thanksgiving through Christmas, and especially on Friday evenings, Saturdays, and Sunday afternoons/evenings the first three weekends in December is critically important.
If you aren’t going to be available, especially on the first three weekends in December, please do not waste your time or ours. We have had singers come to rehearsals, get costumes, and then never get a single gig because they aren’t available. This takes an available slot away from a singer who might really need the work. Please do not apply if you are not going to be available. We have a limited number of costumes and folders. If we put 40 singers on the roster and 25 of them tell us they are unavailable for gigs on a weekend date, that puts us in a real bind.
Remember, each time just one singer is unavailable,
that means an entire quartet is unavailable!
Last year we actually had to turn down performance opportunities because one of the four parts could not be filled. We don’t want to find ourselves in that position again. Please only apply if you’re going to be available in general during the holiday season.
